On October 3, 2011, U.S. Trade Representative Kirk met with First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Shuvalov. They discussed a range of issues, with a focus on Russia’s World Trade Organization accession negotiations, which have entered a final phase. USTR Kirk expressed confidence that remaining issues, including satisfactory resolution of bilateral discussions between Russia and Georgia, would be addressed constructively and in a manner enabling Russia to meet its objective of concluding the WTO negotiations by the end of the year.
Russia export controls and sanctions
The use of export controls and sanctions on Russia has surged since the country's invasion of Crimea in 2014, and especially its invasion of Ukraine in in February 2022. The World Customs Organization has posted information on an International Forum “Customs and Business: International Aspects of Cooperation” to be held October 19-20, 2011 in Moscow, Russia. WCO states that the Forum will be attended by the top officials of the Russian government, WCO, customs authorities of other countries, EurAsEc, Customs Union, as well as top management of leading companies. The event will be in English and Russian.
Export.gov has announced a series of trade missions that are scheduled for August 2011 through April 2012.
On September 16, 2011, U.S. Trade Representative Kirk hosted the sixth meeting of the U.S. - Central Asia Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) Council in Washington, D.C. Attendees included delegations from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan, as well as officials from numerous other U.S. Government agencies. The meeting focused on the importance of reducing or eliminating barriers to trade and investment in Central Asia and facilitating cross-border transactions.
