On January 30, 2012, the Senate Banking Committee announced that on February 2 the Committee will mark-up (i.e., consider and vote on) a draft bill which would provide for a range of new measures for the President to employ to increase pressure on Iran to comply with its international obligations. The marked-up bill would then be introduced in the Senate.
On January 31, 2012, the Chairmen of the Senate Finance and House Ways and Means Committees called on the Administration to pressure China to stop undervaluing its currency at the upcoming World Trade Organization Working Group on Trade, Debt ,and Finance symposium in March 2012.
On January 31, 2011, President Obama signed into law H.R. 3800, the "Airport and Airway Extension Act of 2012," which extends through February 17, 2012, authorities to collect taxes that fund the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, make expenditures from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, and make grants to airports under the Airport Improvement Program.
On February 2, 2012, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will hold a mark-up of the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act, legislation to provide a long term reauthorization and reform of federal surface transportation programs.
On January 26, 2012, the Senate passed H.R. 3800, the Airport and Airway Extension Act which would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to extend the funding and expenditure authority of the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, to amend title 49, U.S. Code, to extend authorizations for the airport improvement program. The House passed H.R. 3800 on January 24, 2012.
On November 1, 2011, Representative Berman (D-CA) and 12 co-sponsors1 introduced H.R. 3288, the “Safeguarding U.S. Satellite Leadership and Security Act of 2011,” which would restore the President’s ability to determine what export restrictions should apply to commercial satellites and related components, but prohibit outright any such exports to China, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Sudan, or Cuba.
On January 26, 2012, Senate Minority Leader McConnell (R-KY) addressed the Senate to discuss his recent trip to Burma. In his remarks, McConnell noted that Burma appears to have made some progress toward democracy in the past six months, but that more progress is needed before sanctions can be lifted.
