- Appellate Body member Hyun Chong Kim resigns. Hyun Chong Kim resigned from his post as a member of the WTO’s Appellate Body on Aug. 1 (here).
- Qatar files WTO complaints against the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Qatar has requested WTO dispute consultations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia concerning measures adopted by the three countries which allegedly restrict trade in goods and services from Qatar, and trade-related intellectual property rights (here).
- Trade indicator points to continued modest recovery of world trade in third quarter. The WTO’s latest World Trade Outlook Indicator (WTOI) suggests that global merchandise trade growth will continue to strengthen in the third quarter of 2017 (here).
- Provisional programme for 2017 Public Forum now available. This year’s Public Forum, entitled “Trade: Behind the Headlines”, will feature 102 sessions focusing on how to make trade more inclusive, trade and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and trade and jobs (here).
- Azevêdo meets Nicaraguan leaders, stresses need for good result at MC11. Director-General Roberto Azevêdo met today, Aug. 3, with Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Trade Minister Orlando Solórzano, and discussed the need for a solid outcome at the WTO’s forthcoming 11th Ministerial Conference (MC11) in Buenos Aires, as well as the importance of agriculture and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to the country’s economy (here).
- Panama stands to gain from continued engagement at WTO: DG Azevêdo. Panama stands to gain from continued engagement on a range of trade issues now being discussed at the WTO, Director-General Roberto Azevêdo said during his visit to the isthmus nation on Aug. 2 (here).
- DG Azevêdo: Guatemala 'punches above its weight' in WTO. In his first visit to Guatemala as head of the WTO, Director-General Roberto Azevêdo praised the Central American country for its active and constructive role in the organization (here).
