Senators Snowe (R) and Collins (R) and Representatives Michaud (D) and Pingree (D) called on President Obama to conduct an in-depth examination of China’s unfair subsidization of its domestic paper industry. These Senator and Representatives were joined by over 100 lawmakers from 30 states in asking the President to use the study as the basis for action to remedy unfair trade practices.
On July 27, 2010, Senator Collins (R), Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and Senator Murray (D), introduced a bipartisan bill that would extend port security programs now in place in the U.S. The measure, “The SAFE Port Reauthorization Act of 2010,” would extend anti-terrorism protections designed to safeguard the U.S. shipping lanes and seaports from attack and sabotage. (Senators Collins and Murray coauthored the original SAFE Port Act in 2005.)

The House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection will hold a hearing on H.R. 5820, the “Toxic Chemicals Safety Act of 2010,” on July 29, 2010. H.R. 5820 would amend the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 to ensure that the public and the environment are protected from risks resulting from chemical exposure.
