More Transparency on TikTok Divestiture Deal Needed, Senator Says

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., urged the Trump administration Dec. 29 to release more details on the U.S.-China deal that will transfer ownership of TikTok from China’s ByteDance to American investors (see 2509250064).

Blumenthal said he’s concerned that the recommendation algorithm for the popular social media application might remain under China’s control. "Transparency & structural constraints are urgently demanded," he wrote on X. "Americans need to know what safeguards will be in place & who will be making decisions about what TikTok users can see & say."

The White House had no immediate comment on Blumenthal’s statements. A 2024 law requires ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a U.S. ban on the app (see 2404240043).
