US Gives Hungary Waiver From Russia Energy Sanctions

The Trump administration has given Hungary a one-year exemption from sanctions that it recently imposed on two major Russian energy companies, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said late Nov. 12.

“In the case of the pipelines on oil and gas, it’s a one-year extension because it would be deeply traumatic to their economy to cut them off immediately,” Rubio told reporters during a trip to Canada for the Group of Seven foreign ministers meeting. President Donald Trump said five days earlier that he was considering such an exemption for Hungary (see 2511070034).

Rubio also said the administration is waiving sanctions to allow Hungary to finish a nuclear power construction project that involves a Russian company.
