Lawmaker Eyes New Bill to Sanction Belarus

Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said late Jan. 27 that he plans to introduce legislation in the “coming weeks” to sanction Belarus over its “sham” presidential election.

The Jan. 26 election, which extended the longtime rule of Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, has drawn widespread criticism from democratic governments for occurring amid a crackdown on political dissent.

Smith, who already has authored three laws sanctioning Lukashenko and his “henchmen,” said his new bill will aim to “respond better to the current situation in Belarus.”
