Commerce officials said the decision to remove the institute from the list has led the Chinese government to become more helpful in stemming the flow of illegal fentanyl drugs to the U.S. (see 2312120070). But Ogles said the institute should be added back to the Entity List because of its connection to human rights violations. “It’s past time for the US to confront the [Chinese Communist Party's] human rights abusers, and Congress will have to lead in the absence of a strong Commander-in-Chief," he said.

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., who helped to introduce the bill, said the Biden administration has "chosen to reward a Communist Chinese company despite their genocidal crimes and human rights abuses against the Uyghur population and other ethnic minorities." The legislation will "ensure no U.S. technology is benefiting Communist China’s human rights abuses,” she said.
