EU Opens WTO Compliance Proceedings Against Colombia

The EU on May 31 opened compliance proceedings against Colombia regarding the South American nation's alleged failure to comply with World Trade Organization rulings regarding its antidumping duties on frozen fries from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, the EU's Directorate-General for Trade announced.

A dispute settlement panel at the WTO sided against Colombia, and after the decision, the parties elected to use the WTO's Multi-Party Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA) in lieu of a functioning Appellate Body, sending the case to arbitration. At this level, the EU won again (see 2212230025).

The EU last week said Colombia's AD continue to violate the nation's WTO commitments. Under WTO rules, the parties will hold consultations within 15 days of the request, after which the EU can request a compliance panel.
