New House Bill Eyes More Belarus Sanctions
A bipartisan group of five House members led by Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., introduced a bill that would expand the list of Belarusian authorities who could face U.S. sanctions, Smith’s office announced May 15.

Under the proposed Belarus Democracy, Human Rights and Sovereignty Act of 2024, sanctions could go beyond the country’s senior leadership and security services to potentially include those directly responsible for abducting Ukrainian children, cooperating with Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and supporting Russian militarization of Belarusian territory.
The bill, which would also reauthorize the Belarus Democracy Act of 2004 for the fourth time, is intended to promote democracy and human rights in a country with a “brutal dictatorship,” Smith’s announcement says.
