G7 Threatens 'Significant Measures' If Iran Continues Supporting Russia

The Group of 7 nations last week warned Iran to “immediately” stop sending weapons and important technology to Russia, or it will “face severe costs.”

In a March 15 joint statement released by the Council of the EU, the G7 nations -- which include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K. the U.S. and the EU -- said they are “extremely concerned about reports” that Iran is considering sending ballistic missiles and related technology to Russia. They noted that Iran has previously supplied Moscow with unmanned drones for its war against Ukraine.

“We call on Iran not to do so, as it would add to regional destabilization and represent a substantive material escalation in its support for Russia’s war in Ukraine -- an aggression which constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and the UN Charter,” the countries said. If Iran decides to send the missiles and technology to Russia, “we are prepared to respond swiftly and in a coordinated manner including with new and significant measures against Iran,” the statement said.
