Non-EU Countries Align With Sanctions Moves on Russia, Haiti, DRC, Lebanon

A group of European countries not in the EU aligned with a series of EU sanctions decisions, under the regimes for the situation in Haiti, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lebanon and Russia.

Under the Russia sanctions list, the European Council extended the sectoral restrictions for another six months and added seven individuals and five entities to the restrictions. The countries of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway also imposed the moves, the council said in two notices Aug. 28.

The council in July established its framework for sanctioning those threatening the peace in Haiti. The countries of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland and Liechtenstein aligned with the move by also establishing this sanctions framework.

Under the DRC sanctions regime, the council amended the designation criteria to allow for targeted restrictions against parties that sustain the conflict and added nine entries to the list. The countries of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway also imposed the decisions, the council said in two notices.

In July, the council also extended its sanctions regime pertaining to the situation in Lebanon for another year. The countries of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland and Liechtenstein aligned with the move, the council said.
