Non-EU Countries Align With EU Sanctions Moves Related to Iran, Myanmar, Human Rights Abuses

A group of European countries not in the EU aligned with recent sanctions moves from the European Council regarding Iran's support for Russia's war in Ukraine, serious human rights abuses and the situation in Myanmar.

The council on July 20 established a new sanctions framework in light of Iran's support to Russia, including the provision of unmanned aerial vehicles, for the fighting in Ukraine. North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland and Liechtenstein also imposed the framework, the council said Aug. 11.

The council made two sanctions moves pertaining to its restrictive measures against serious human rights abuses. One added 12 individuals and five entities to the list, while the other added another six individuals to the sanctions regime. North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lichtenstein and Norway aligned with the moves, the council said in a pair of news releases.

Under the Myanmar sanctions list, the council added six individuals and one entity to the sanctions regime. North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway also imposed the decision, the council noted.
