UK Rolls Out New Russia Sanctions, Export Restrictions

The U.K. unfurled a new round of sanctions on Russia to mark the one-year anniversary of its invasion of Ukraine, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced. The sanctions ban the export of "every item Ukraine has found Russia using on the battlefield to date" and place individual restrictions on another 92 individuals and entities. Sanctions target parties connected to state-owned nuclear power company Rosatom and Russian President Vladimir's Putin's closest allies, including his former chief of security and the CEO of Nord Stream 2, the FCDO said.

The ban on all goods found to be used by Russia on the battlefield includes "aircraft parts, radio equipment, and electronic components that can be used by the Russian military industrial complex, including in the production" of unmanned aerial vehicles, the U.K. said. In addition, Britain said it is banning the import of 140 goods, "including iron and steel products processed in third countries." Existing measures also will be extended to Crimea and nongovernment controlled territory in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Individual sanctions cover executives at Rosatom, Russia's two largest defense companies, four banks and "other Russian elites." The U.K. said Rosatom has been supplying arms manufacturers with the materials needed to restock Russia's front line, including designated firms. Other newly sanctioned parties include six Russian entities linked to the manufacture or repair of military equipment for the Russian military and five senior Iranian executives in Qods Aviation Industry, the company that makes drones used in Ukraine.
