US Should Send Modern Tanks, Missile Systems to Ukraine, Lawmaker Says

The Biden administration should quickly approve shipments of "critical weapon systems" to Ukraine, including "Leopard 2 tanks, ATACMS, and other long-range precision munitions," Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a Jan. 18 statement. The country's "current indecision" is "costing Ukrainian lives," it said, and the administration should approve the shipments "without delay."

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said this week the U.S. is "the country that has provided the most assistance" to Ukraine and is assessing what else it needs. "We are in constant conversations with Ukraine on what their needs are," she said. "And so we’re going to continue to do that alongside our partners and also our allies."

The U.S. is preparing to announce a large military aid package to Ukraine but has been hesitant to send in modern tanks, CNN reported Jan. 18, partly to manage "escalation" with Russia. The U.S. has been more cautious than some of its allies, including the U.K., which recently announced it will send 12 of its Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, the report said.
