Non-EU Countries Align With 6 Recent EU Sanctions Decisions

Various European countries outside the EU aligned themselves with a string of six recent sanctions decisions made by the European Council, the EC said in Jan. 16 news releases.

In October, the council extended the existing Guinea sanctions regime for another 12 months. The countries of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway aligned with the decision, the council said.

The council also extended for a year another sanctions regime targeting Turkey for its drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, setting up the sanctions to expire in November. The countries of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and Iceland also imposed the decision, the council said.

The council on Dec. 5 renewed its human rights sanctions regime for another 12 months, leading to North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to also enact the decision, the council said.

The next week, on Dec. 12, the council issued three decisions. It updated the list of individuals and entities subject to the North Korea restrictions list, with North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway then aligning with the decision.

The council also amended the list of individuals and entities subject to the EU's Iran sanctions regime, with North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway also implementing the move, the council said.

Additionally, it extended the restrictions on Mali for another year, leading North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to align with the move.
