Republicans Call for National Strategy to Counter China
Two top Republicans on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee urged the Biden administration to craft a specific strategy to address the “new era of geostrategic and geoeconomic competition with China.” In a Nov. 17 letter to the White House, Sens. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, and Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said the U.S. needs a “comprehensive strategy” to address China’s human rights violations in Hong Kong, its expanding military presence in the South China Sea and its “predatory economic practices.”

The strategy is mandated by the fiscal year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act, the lawmakers said. President Joe Biden is required to convene an "advisory board of outside experts from the private sector, academia, and think tanks to analyze, challenge, and make recommendations for the strategy,” they said. The lawmakers plan to request “periodic updates about the progression of this effort” and requested an update on the progress of implementing the required development of the strategy within 60 days. The White House didn’t comment.
