US, Canada to Strengthen Russia-Related Export Control Enforcement
The U.S. and Canada this week announced an initiative to strengthen collaboration on Russia-related export controls. In a joint statement, the Bureau of Industry and Security and the Canada Border Services Agency said they will share more trade information to stop Russia from acquiring sensitive technologies, including through coordinated pre- and post-shipment verifications and audits. The two countries will also work more closely on inspections of exports, seizures and export control investigations.

The partnership “further strengthens the close ties” between the U.S. and Canada and “sends a strong message to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s government that we will stand together in our efforts to choke off its ability to sustain aggression, and in solidarity with Ukrainian people,” BIS Undersecretary Alan Estevez said. Marco Mendicino, Canada’s public safety minister, said the country is “redoubling efforts” to stop Russia from importing critical goods and technologies. “This renewed collaboration with the United States will help bolster these efforts and hold Russia accountable,” Mendicino said.
