Canadian Government Notices as of Feb. 12

The government of Canada issued the following trade-related notices as of Feb. 12 (some may also be given separate headlines):

  • Fisheries and Oceans Canada's prohibition on the importation and exportation of shark fins. The Canada Border Services Agency issued Customs Notice 21-02 advising that as of June 21, 2019, shark fins that are not attached to a shark carcass are prohibited from being imported into or exported from Canada except in accordance with a permit issued by the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard authorizing the import or export. A permit will be issued only if the importation or exportation is “for the purpose of scientific research related to shark conservation and if, in the Minister’s opinion, the scientific research is likely to benefit the survival of any shark species or is required to enhance the chances of survival of any shark species in the wild.” In addition, species of sharks protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora must also have the required CITES permit(s) for import to or export from Canada.
  • CUSMA textile/apparel TPL utilization. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade updated the 2021 Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement textile and apparel tariff preference level utilization rate for imports and exports. CUSMA is known as USMCA in the U.S.
  • Product Recalls: Belkin Portable Wireless Charger and Stand Special Edition manufactured in China recalled, for fire and electric shock hazards; one lot of THC Biomed Ltd. THC Kiss Gummies-strawberry (Lot 2498) manufactured and distributed in Canada recalled, for mold contamination, posing health hazard; Progression Fitness X-Plode PFX-2200 Functional Trainer Gym manufactured in China recalled, for injury hazard.
