Bipartisan Letter From NY Lawmakers Asks USTR to Hold Canada Accountable on Dairy Market Access
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., joined by one Republican and three Democratic congressmen from the New York House delegation, is asking the U.S. Trade Representative to make sure that Canada keeps its promises on dairy tariff rate quotas and eliminating Class 6 and Class 7 milk price controls.

A letter, dated July 30, said that the members are concerned that Canada's dairy industry wants “to obscure information surrounding pricing regulations relating to the Class 6 and 7 milk price classification.” It also said that Canada's TRQ distribution plan would “discourage high value U.S. dairy products from entering its market,” and that violates the agreement.
In a press release announcing the letter, Jaime Castaneda, senior vice president for international trade at the U.S. Dairy Export Council, said, “Canada’s efforts to evade the commitments they made to the U.S. on dairy by manipulating their agreed-upon trade obligations are wholly unacceptable.” He said the group appreciates the leadership of the letter signers on behalf of upstate New York dairy farmers.
The other signers were Reps. Anthony Brindisi, D-N.Y., John Katko, R-N.Y., Antonio Delgado, D-N.Y., and Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y.
