House Democrats Ask Pompeo to Raise Issue of Labor Activist's Arrest With Mexico

More than 50 House Democrats, led by Ways and Means Committee member Rep. Bill Pascrell of New Jersey, asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to raise the issue of a Mexican labor activist's arrest with his Mexican counterparts.

Susana Prieto Terrazas, a labor lawyer, is being held in jail (see 2006260060). Pascrell noted she has been denied bail, which is putting her life at risk “because Mexican jails, like those in the United States, are hotbeds for COVID-19 transmission.”

The June 30 letter said Mexico's president is arriving at the White House for a summit soon, and urged Pompeo to bring up the issue both before the summit and at the meeting. “Continuation of Ms. Prieto’s case sends the wrong message to workers and activists that authorities in Mexico at all levels of government will not protect workers’ rights from threats and violations,” Pascrell said.
