E3 Countries Urge Iran to Return to JCPOA, Denounce US Sanctions
The Uni, Germany and France said they remain committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, again urged Iran to return to the deal and expressed concerned with U.S. sanctions. “We have made clear our regret and concern at the decision by the United States to withdraw from the JCPoA and to re-impose sanctions on Iran,” the countries said in a Jan. 12 joint statement. “Despite increasingly difficult circumstances, we have worked hard to preserve the agreement … it is essential that Iran return to full compliance with its commitments.”

The countries said all JCPOA parties “need” to define a “long-term framework” for Iran’s nuclear program to ensure “Iran never develops a nuclear weapon.” Iran recently announced it was no longer complying with the deal, but said it would return if certain conditions are met, including European action to mitigate U.S. sanctions (see 2001060048). The U.S. imposed a series of new Iran sanctions last week (see 2001100050). “We remain committed to the JCPoA and to preserving it … and we remain ready to engage with Iran on this agenda in order to preserve the stability of the region,” the statement said.
