Japan Releases Statement Critical of South Korea Amid Dispute
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry released a July 24 statement about Japan’s ongoing dispute with South Korea, saying South Korea’s position on “catch-all controls” are “unclear” and criticizing South Korea for continuously postponing “policy dialogue” talks.

The dispute between the two countries arose from Japan’s July 1 decision to place more restrictions on technological exports, including smartphones and chips, to South Korea (see 1907010020). South Korea responded by raising a dispute with Japan at the World Trade Organization (see 1907150074).
In its statement, Japan said it has “yet to receive a detailed explanation” of South Korea’s export control system. Japan also said South Korea has “postponed” talks “on every occasion, even after both sides agreed on the specific date for the scheduled dialogue.” Japan said the lack of coordination on talks “hinders the formation of the two countries’ relationship of trust.”
