"Without imports of olive oil from Europe, the United States cannot meet current consumer demand. The United States is the largest importer of olive oil, about 70 percent of which comes from the EU," they said. Duties of up to 100 percent on olive oil are possible, and that could drive prices up for all olive oil purchasers, both consumers and restaurants.

Pascrell and Arrington said that olive oil is healthier than other oils, and more people should be encouraged to use it. Tariffs would be counter to that goal, they added.
