Bills on Product Safety Pass House Energy and Commerce Committee
The House Energy and Commerce Committee passed five consumer product safety bills July 17, that address furniture, baby products and portable fuel containers. The bill are:

- The STURDY Act (Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) requires the Consumer Product Safety Commission to promulgate a rule for bureaus and dressers that would prevent tip-over injuries to children.
- Another bill would prohibit the sale or importation of any inclined sleeper for infants.
- Another bill would prohibit the sale or importation of any padded crib bumper.
- The SOFFA Act (Safer Occupancy Furniture Flammability Act) would require the CPSC to follow California's flammability standards for indoor upholstered furniture.
- The Portable Fuel Container Safety Act directs the CPSC to create a rule for flame mitigation devices on fuel containers used by the public.
Committee Chairman Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J., said in a release after the bills passed that they "will save countless lives and ensure the Consumer Product Safety Commission acts quickly to enforce the law and educate consumers about these common household dangers. I commend Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair [Jan] Schakowsky and all of the bill sponsors for their leadership."
