Witness List for NAFTA Enforcement Hearing Released

Democrats have invited union and environmental experts, along with a former customs and rule-of-origin lawyer in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and Democratic trade staffer, to testify at a House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee hearing on enforcement in the new NAFTA. The hearing, which will be held May 22, also has a Republican witness, Devry Boughner Vorwerk, corporate vice president for global corporate affairs for Cargill, a major agriculture company.

The Democratic witnesses are:

  • Beth Baltzan, consultant with Phoenix Trade Advisory Services, former USTR lawyer and Ways and Means Committee trade staffer
  • Owen Herrnstadt, chief of staff to the international president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. The Machinists oppose NAFTA, noting that aerospace firms have moved jobs from the U.S. and Canada to Mexico to benefit from low wages, and there are more than 30,000 aerospace jobs there now.
  • Sandra Polaski, former deputy director-general for policy at the International Labor Organization
  • Alexander von Bismarck, executive director of the Environmental Investigation Agency.
