Canadian Government Notices as of Oct. 19

  • Funding to support Canada’s steel industry. Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains was set to announce on Oct. 19 the first investment under the Canadian government’s Strategic Innovation Fund in support of the national steel industry, during a visit to ArcelorMittal Dofasco in Hamilton, Ontario. The Strategic Innovation Fund allocates repayable and non-repayable contributions to firms of all sizes across all of Canada's industrial and technology sectors. The program has a budget of $1.26 billion over five years. As announced on June 29, 2018, and in response to additional tariffs imposed by the United States, the Government of Canada will offer up to $250 million in new support through the Strategic Innovation Fund to help bolster the competitiveness of Canadian manufacturers.
  • Dumping of certain carbon steel welded pipe. The Canada Border Services Agency on Oct. 18 issued its preliminary determination of dumping with respect to certain carbon steel welded pipe originating in or exported from Pakistan, the Philippines, Turkey and Vietnam. The investigation follows a complaint filed by Novamerican Steel Inc. The goods in question are usually classified under the following tariff classification numbers: 7306.30.00.10, 7306.30.00.20 and 7306.30.00.30. CBSA will release a Statement of Reasons that will be available within 15 days.
  • TRQ for beef and veal available for reallocation. Global Affairs Canada announced Oct. 17 that the tariff rate quota for beef and veal is now available for reallocation. The quantity available for reallocation under the beef and veal TRQ as of Oct. 9, 2018, is 24,432,904 kg.
  • Product Recalls: Mom Life Market recalls 10-inch and 17-inch personalized stuffed plush bunnies manufactured in Canada, for unsafe phthalate levels; CTG recalls Friction Powered School Bus toys manufactured in China, for choking hazard; Flushmate recalls Flushmate II 501-B pressure-assisted flushing systems manufactured in the U.S., for impact and laceration hazards; Ryerson Canada and Vista Railings System Inc. recalls Various ProBuilt aluminum deck railing posts manufactured in Vietnam, for fall hazard; Hydrolevel Company recalls HydroStat 3000 controllers used with Slant Fin VSPH Series residential boilers manufactured in the U.S., for fire hazard.
