Canadian Government Notices as of Sept. 21

  • First anniversary of CETA entry into force. Canada is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, or CETA, which Global Affairs Canada said in a statement "is a landmark agreement that set new standards for how we build trade deals moving forward. ... One year in, Canada is already seeing the rewards for those entrepreneurs, exporters and early adopters who recognized the opportunity. This has translated into an almost 10 per cent increase in trade since CETA went into effect -- or $100-billion in bilateral trade."
  • CFIA suspends operating license of Vantage Foods. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency suspended the operating license of Vantage Foods of Belleville, Ontario, effective Sept. 18, 2018, because the registered meat processing establishment failed to meet regulatory requirements as required by the Meat Inspection Regulations, 1990. There is no recall associated with the suspension.
  • CBSA determination procedures for obscenity and hate propaganda. The Canada Border Services Agency on Sept. 20 issued an update to Memorandum D9-1-17, which outlines and explains the CBSA procedures when dealing with suspect obscenity and hate propaganda (including sedition and treason). The memorandum was revised to modify the address in paragraph 39, on forwarding goods.
  • NAFTA textile/apparel TPL utilization. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade updated the 2018 NAFTA textile and apparel tariff preference level utilization rate for imports and exports.
  • Product Recalls: Cybex International Inc. recalls Cybex Smith Press models 5340 and 5341 exercise equipment manufactured in the UU.S., for fall hazard; Siu & Sons Int’l Trading recalls Color Fantastik assorted rubber animal toys manufactured in China, for choking hazard; Exclusive Brands and iSweet recall Kidsmania Bubble Dozer toy vehicle manufactured in China, for choking hazard; Imagine+ recalls Minyore Aircraft toy airplanes manufactured in China, for choking hazard; TJX Canada recalls Casa Décor brand Mercury Glass Crackling Knobs manufactured in India, for laceration hazard.
