Canadian Government Notices as of Sept. 7

- Canadian international merchandise trade for July 2018. Statistics Canada reports that Canada's merchandise trade deficit with the world narrowed from $743 million in June to $114 million in July, the smallest deficit since the most recent surplus in December 2016. Total exports rose 0.8%, mainly on higher crude oil prices. Total imports declined 0.4%, due to fewer aircraft imports, according to the report.
- CBSA initiates scope proceeding for certain fabricated industrial steel components. The Canada Border Services Agency on Sept. 6 initiated a scope proceeding, under the Special Import Measures Act, with respect to certain fabricated industrial steel components from China, South Korea and Spain. The proceeding is the result of an application filed by Shanghai Shuangyan Chemical Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (of Shanghai, China), a potential exporter of the goods that are the subject of the application. The scope proceeding will establish whether or not modules are subject to the Canadian International Trade Tribunal’s injury finding issued on May 25, 2017, in Inquiry No. NQ 2016 004, concerning the dumping of certain FISC from China, South Korea (excluding those goods exported by Hanmaek Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.) and Spain (excluding those goods exported by Cintasa, S.A.), and the subsidizing of FISC from China.
- Product Recalls: TJX Canada recalls swivel barstools manufactured in China, for fall hazard; Hawthorne Hydroponics LLC recalls Idea-Air 175 pint industrial grade humidifiers manufactured in China, for fire and electrical shock hazards; Burton recalls Step On snowboard boots manufactured in China, for fall hazard.
