AMS Removes Exemptions for Non-Organic Substances Allowed in Organic Handling

The Agricultural Marketing Service is taking several non-agricultural substances off the list of non-organic substances that may be used in organic handling, it said. The agency’s final rule (here), which implements changes to the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances recommended by the National Organic Standards Board, removes exemptions for the following substances: egg white lysozyme, cyclohexylamine, diethylaminoethanol, octadecylamine and tetrasodium pyrophosphate. The final rule takes effect Sept. 12.
