That decision came with a cost but was necessary, he said. “It hurts our capabilities because our adversaries go to school on that very transparency,” Clapper said. “We made the painful choice to declassify critical documents in the interest of being more transparent.” Clapper rebuffed the idea of leaving his job anytime soon and said he plans “to stick around” in his position as long as he can.
