- Russia trade relations after WTO accession. The EU's third-largest trade partner is Russia. Bilateral trade relations will be improved by Russia's joining the WTO, provided that Russia meets all its WTO obligations, says the European Parliament in a resolution voted by a show of hands. MEPs said Russia was still introducing potentially trade-restrictive measures just before it joined WTO in August 2012, like Russia's recent ban on livestock imports from the EU, preferential treatment of domestic producers in public procurement, seasonal import duties on some types of sugar and recycling scheme for vehicles as worrying signs that it is not fully committed to meeting its WTO obligations. The production and sale of counterfeit products in Russia must also stop, in line with Russia's WTO commitments, they say. (here)
- EU-Japan trade talks. Members of European Parliament said the EU should start talks on a free trade deal with Japan. Pointing to the huge gains for jobs and growth that deeper trade ties could bring as benefits of an agreement. However, members also say talks will be suspended if Japan fails to remove barriers in key sectors, specifically EU car sales. The resolution also calls for a binding clause to schedule a review within a year of the start of talks, to assess whether Japan has delivered clear results (here)
