Seafood Company Issues Recall After FDA Finds Korean Shellfish Unsanitary

Crown Prince Seafoods is notifying all of its wholesalers to suspend shipments and retailers to remove Korean shellfish from their shelves, reported the Food and Drug Administration. Crown Prince’s announcement follows an FDA alert on May 25 that canned Korean shellfish are considered by FDA to be adulterated.

(On May 1, 2012, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) removed all Korean certified shippers of molluscan shellfish (oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops) from the Interstate Certified Shellfish Shippers List (ICSSL), following a comprehensive FDA evaluation that determined that the Korean Shellfish Sanitation Program (KSSP) no longer meets the sanitation controls spelled out under the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. FDA’s evaluation of the KSSP found significant shellfish growing area deficiencies including (1) ineffective management of land-based pollution sources that can impact shellfish growing areas; (2) inadequate sanitary controls to prevent the discharge of human fecal waste from fish farms and commercial fishing and aquaculture vessels operating in and adjacent to shellfish growing areas; and (3) detection of norovirus in shellfish growing areas analyzed by FDA during the evaluation.)

Crown Prince Seafoods said the affected products are:

  • Item UPC 0 73230 00052 2 -- Crown Prince Whole Boiled Oysters
  • Item UPC 0 73230 00852 8 -- Crown Prince Natural Whole Boiled Oysters
  • Item UPC 0 73230 00851 1 -- Crown Prince Natural Smoked Oysters in Olive Oil
  • Item UPC 0 73230 00866 5 -- Crown Prince Natural Smoked Oysters with Chili Pepper

FDA said this only affects oysters from Korea. No other Crown Prince items or countries of origin are affected by this recall.

According to the FDA’s report, it is the understanding of Crown Prince that negotiations between the Korean and U.S. governments have been escalated and additional information will be provided in the near future
