- L. America countries launch anticounterfeit operation: Twelve Latin American countries launched Operation Tigre 2, an enforcement operation to combat counterfeiting and piracy led by the WCO and Panama Customs. The operation will protect consumers and test the WCO Interface Public Members (IPM), a tool for right holders to share information that will lead to faster identification of counterfeit goods by Customs. - Forest/wildlife crime enforcement strategies. During an International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime workshop, customs and other officials agreed that interception of smuggled wildlife and forest commodities seldom leads to the arrest and conviction of those criminals who organize the smuggling. They stated that allowing contraband to continue its journey in a 'controlled' manner often enables enforcement agencies to uncover evidence to identify actors at all stages of a poaching and trafficking operation. - Nigerian business seeks quicker clearance, etc: Business representatives attending the Customs-Business Dialogue in Nigeria suggested greater trade facilitation to trusted traders, enhanced security coordination with other government agencies, and quicker clearance. Secretary General Mikuriya concluded the session by stressing finding solutions through evidence-based research such as the WCO Time Release Study and the adoption of Customs global standards, such as the WCO Revised Kyoto Convention. - 66th Session of the WCO Policy Commission: The Policy Commission approved and issued a Resolution which included the coverage of air cargo security in the SAFE Framework of Standards and the coordination necessary between relevant authorities and bodies at national and international levels. In-depth discussions were held on the following topics, “Emerging and evolving risks” and “Globally Networked Customs.” The Policy Commission also expressed its support and encouragement in respect of the work being carried out by the Secretariat on a number of key initiatives, including the Revenue Package, security and facilitation, capacity building, Programme Global Shield, and the choice of “connectivity” as the theme for International Customs Day 2012 (here) (See ITT's Online Archives 11121229 for more detailed summary of Resolution.)
