Textile and Apparel Import Data Shows 1.5% YTD Decline, 5.4% Decrease for Sept

The Office of Textiles and Apparel has issued monthly reports containing official September 2011 trade data from the Census Bureau for U.S. imports and exports of textiles and apparel. (As complete August 2011 data is no longer available, highlights from OTEXA's report containing August 2011 trade data is summarized at the end of this notice.)

General Import Report. This report shows general textile and apparel imports from the world and from major supplier countries & regions. Its statistics are by quantity (square meter equivalents, SME) organized into the following groups: yarn, fabrics, made-up and misc, apparel, & non-apparel total.

According to the report for September, imports of textiles and apparel were 41,024.5 million square meter equivalents (MSME) for the year-to-date (YTD1) September 2011, a decrease of 1.5% from year-to-date September 2010. Imports of textiles were 22,602.7 MSME for the year-to-date September 2011, a decline of 2.7% from the year-to-date September 2010. Apparel imports for the year-to-date September 2011 were 18,421.9 MSME, up 0.1% from the year-to-date September 2010.

Imports of cotton, wool, man-made fiber, silk blends, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 4,874.5 MSME in September 2011, a decline of 5.4% compared to September 2010. Imports of textiles were 2,561.4 MSME in September 2011, down 3.2% from September 2010. Imports of apparel were 2,313.2 MSME in September 2011, down 7.6% from September 2010.

Major Shippers Report. This report provides general import statistics by date of import into the U.S. for “major shipper” countries in terms of quantity or value for the 12-month period of October 1, 2010 -- September 30, 2011, as compared to the prior 12 month period. Quantity is in category units. Value is in dollars. The top ten “major shippers” for textile and apparel imports for the 12 months ending September 2011 in terms of quantity are noted below, as well as certain trade blocks:

Total Quantity (TQ) Data. These reports show imports from each supplier country and the world by tariff number. Quantity is in category units. Value is in dollars.

Trade Preference Program Report. This report shows country-by-country imports of Tariff Preference Level (TPL) textiles and apparel under the AGOA, ATPDEA or CBTPA by HTS Chapter 98 tariff numbers. Quantity is in category units and square meters equivalent (SME). Value is in dollars. Country-by-country fill rates are also provided.

U.S. Imports under FTAs. This report is organized by regions/countries with which the U.S. has free trade agreements (e.g. DR-CAFTA, Canada, Mexico, Israel, Singapore, etc.) and lists import value for each relevant HTS Chapter 98 and 99 tariff numbers, etc. (Only value, in dollars.)

Trade Balance Report. This report shows imports, exports, and the trade balance for textile and apparel trade with the world and with selected countries/regions/FTAs. Its statistics are organized into: yarn, fabric, made-up, apparel, and total. (Only value, in dollars.)

Footwear, Leather and Fur Products, Travel Goods. These reports provide import and export data by product group for footwear, leather and fur products, and travel goods.

Other Reports. OTEXA’s Web site also contains other reports, including the U.S. Possessions Report, Expanded Export Data (by Schedule B number), and the Export Market Report (by textile group, country, exports to the Middle East, etc.).

According to the General Import Report for August, imports of textiles and apparel were 36,149.8 MSME for year-to-date August 2011, down 0.9% from year-to-date August 2010. Imports of textiles were 20,041.2 MSME for the year-to-date August 2011, a decline of 2.6% from the year-to-date August 2010. Apparel imports for the year-to-date August 2011 were 16,108.6 MSME, up 1.4% from the year-to-date August 2010.

Imports of cotton, wool, man-made fiber, silk blends, and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5,139.6 MSME, a decrease of 5.5% compared to August 2010. Imports of textiles were 2,724.9 MSME in August 2011, down 6.7% from August 2010. Imports of apparel were 2,414.6 MSME in August 2011, down 4.0% from August 2010.
