BIS Invites More Firms to Share Classification Info, Currently 53 Participating

The Bureau of Industry and Security recently issued an invitation to companies to share certain of their export control information on the BIS Commodity Classification Web page. BIS has a renewed interest in expanding company participation on this Web page, as information from only five firms was added to the Web page in the last year (for a total of 53).

Timely, relevant coverage of court proceedings and agency rulings involving tariffs, classification, valuation, origin and antidumping and countervailing duties. (BIS issued this invitation at its Update 2011 conference held on July 19-21, 2011. At the conference, at least one company offered to provide information to BIS on where its Commodity Classification information related to its products may be obtained.)

Posted Info Intended to Help Exporters Comply with Control Laws

BIS’ Commodity Classification Web page is intended to enhance procedural transparency in the licensing process and to help exporters comply with U.S. export and reexport control laws. BIS notes that any company information posted to this page is for informational purposes only and does not signify any additional obligations under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

5 New Firms' Products Include Network Apps & Routers, PCs, Foam Products

The Web page includes a description of each companies' products and services, the export control point of contact for each company, and in some cases, a Web site address.

As of July 2011, five companies have added information since the June 2010 version of the Commodity Classification table regarding the following products:

· Bourns, Inc. - Electronic components.

· Brocade - Fibre Channel backbones, switches, and directors; SAN extension and routing; network management applications; FCoE/CEE solutions; IP routing, switching, application traffic management, security, and wireless mobility products.

· Lenovo International - Personal Computer (PC) products such as desktop, notebook, netbook, workstation, LCD monitors, PC peripherals and low-end servers and associated value add PC software applications such as the Thinkvantage brand.

· PAC Foam Products - Polyurethane foam products.

· Quest Software, Inc. - Software to optimize the performance and availability of applications, databases, networks and operating systems in physical and virtual environments.

Other Products Include Chemicals, Medicines, Smartphones, Etc.

Other products listed include chemicals, medicines, smartphones, various digital devices, aviation electronics, geophysical technology, and nuclear radiation detectors, among others. See BIS' web page for the complete July 2011 list of 53 companies and their information.
