Two CPSC Commissioners Propose Alternative Public Database Rule
Commissioners Nord and Northup of the Consumer Product Safety Commission have proposed an alternative rule to CPSC's debated draft final rule to establish a publicly available and searchable database on consumer product safety incidents, as required by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA).

Say Alternative Addresses Major Flaws on Who Submits Data, Accuracy, Etc.
According to the two Commissioners, their version addresses the major flaws of the draft rule supported by the other three Commissioners. It does this by:
- tightening up who can submit information so that the reports coming into the database are more reliable;
- improving the procedures for correcting inaccurate information so that consumers are not misled by bad information in the database; and
- putting in place procedures for review of reports so that the database does not become a “post it and forget it” exercise.
Commission to Vote November 17 on Final Rule
The two Commissioners believe there is still time for CPSC to make these changes since the vote on the database final rule is not scheduled until November 17, 2010.
