The U.S. Trade Representative is requesting that those interested in serving as panelists for four separate rosters for Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement dispute settlement panels apply by May 13, 2009. A general roster is required to be established under Chapter Twenty (Dispute Settlement), Chapter Twelve (Financial Services), Chapter Sixteen (Labor), and Chapter Seventeen (Environment). 2. U.S. Goods and Services Deficit Decreased in February 2009
The Census Bureau reports that the U.S. international deficit in goods and services decreased to $26.0 billion in February from $36.2 billion (revised) in January, as exports increased and imports decreased. 3. Federal Register Notice on APHIS GE Organisms Proposed Rule Meeting
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has issued a Federal Register notice announcing that it will hold an April 29-30, 2009 public meeting on the issues involved in its proposed rule, ''Importation, Interstate Movement, and Release Into the Environment of Certain Genetically Engineered Organisms.'' In addition, the comment period on the proposed rule is again reopened and extended until June 29, 2009. 4. OFAC Final Rule on Cote d'Ivoire Sanctions
The Office of Foreign Assets has issued a final rule, effective April 13, 2009, which adds a new Part to the Code of Federal Regulations to implement Executive Order 13396 of February 7, 2006, ''Blocking Property of Certain Persons Contributing to the Conflict in Cote d'Ivoire." 7. FDA Warning on Certain Imported Smoked Salmon
The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to eat certain Strubs Norwegian Style Sliced Smoked Steelhead Salmon imported from Canada because of potential contamination with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. 9. Canada, China to Launch Research Initiatives
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada announced that Canada and China will launch six new research initiatives in science and technology worth a total of $6.87 million, to be provided by Canada. The six projects cover a wide variety of fields, from wastewater treatment and climate change to health care and wireless technology.
