Miscellaneous International Trade Notices
Washington Trade Daily reports that with a vote on the U.S.-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) just days away, the White House remains far short of the 218 votes needed to secure House approval of CAFTA. The article opines that in order for CAFTA to pass in the House, the White House will need to win over members who are currently opposed to CAFTA, in addition to winning over the still undecided members. According to Congressional sources, CAFTA is scheduled to be considered by the House during the week of July 25, 2005. 2. Canada, South Korea Launch Free Trade Negotiations
The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) has issued a press release announcing that Canada has launched free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with South Korea, with the first negotiating session to be held in late July 2005 in Seoul. 3. New Int'l Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator at Commerce Dept
The Commerce Department has issued a press release announcing the creation of a new position, Coordinator of International Intellectual Property Enforcement, to help combat intellectual property violations. Chris Israel, the current Deputy Chief of Staff for Secretary Gutierrez, has been appointed to serve in this new position. 4. U.S., India Sign Civil Nuclear Agreement, Congress Must Approve
The Washington File reports that the U.S. and India have signed a nuclear cooperation agreement that would allow American companies to participate in India's civil nuclear energy projects while India commits to place its nuclear facilities under international oversight, refrain from transferring sensitive technology and maintain its moratorium on nuclear testing. The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has issued a notice announcing the recruitment of private-sector members for its six technical advisory committees (TACs):
